More than 1,700 people have died in eastern Congo in the fastest-growing outbreak of the Ebola virus, new data reveals.
The latest government update confirms 3,802 cases and 1,707 fatalities as of Tuesday. Dr Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, expressed uncertainty regarding when the outbreak might peak during a visit to Bunia, near the epicentre.
He cautioned that a significant 80 per cent of new infections are now stemming from community spread rather than traceable contacts.
Declared on 15 May, this particular outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo virus, for which no approved vaccines or treatments currently exist. The response has been severely hampered by a confluence of factors, including delays in contact tracing, difficulties accessing affected regions, deep-seated community mistrust, and persistent violence from armed groups and some residents.
The disease is predominantly concentrated in eastern Congo’s remote Ituri province, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of cases, though it has also spread to five other provinces, including the major city of Kisangani. Neighbouring Uganda, however, declared itself Ebola-free in mid-June after its last patient was discharged.

The crisis is further exacerbated by the fact that patient zero remains unidentified, and ongoing displacement due to armed conflict and illegal mining makes tracing thousands of contacts incredibly difficult.
Healthcare workers, crucial to the containment effort, have faced immense challenges. In Mongbwalu, staff issued an ultimatum over unpaid wages, threatening to escalate action if demands were not met within 24 hours.
Previously, workers in Bunia went on strike over pay and dangerous conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that over 100 healthcare professionals have been infected since the outbreak began.
This current outbreak has claimed more lives at a quicker pace than any previous one, including the 2014-2016 epidemic which saw over 11,000 deaths from 28,000 cases.
That earlier outbreak took approximately eight months to reach 1,000 fatalities, highlighting the accelerated nature of the current crisis. A significant funding gap, attacks on health centres, and the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo continue to impede effective intervention.
Amid these grave challenges, a glimmer of hope has emerged with the recent commencement of a highly anticipated study in Ituri, testing two potential Ebola treatments.
