Unemployment Reaches Highest Level Since March 2017

The Czech Republic is facing its highest unemployment rate in over eight years, with 333,624 people without jobs at the end of August. The unemployment rate has risen to 4.5 percent, marking a 0.1 percentage point increase since July and a 0.7 percentage point rise year-over-year.

Despite these concerning figures, Labor Minister Marian Jurečka maintains that this mild increase aligns with typical summer trends when companies reduce hiring activities. Martin Jánský from employment agency Randstad CR echoes this sentiment, attributing the rise to seasonal factors including unfavorable summer weather that affected tourism and seasonal sales, as well as job seekers postponing interviews during heat waves.

More optimistic experts, including Andrea Linhartová Palánová from PwC, anticipate a potential recovery in September as graduates enter the workforce and export-oriented companies adjust following the resolution of customs issues with the USA. Matěj Novák, acting director of the Labor Office, also expects hiring to pick up after the holiday season, particularly in sectors like education.

However, not all analysts share this optimism. Miroslav Novák from Citfin points to a cooling labor market despite domestic economic growth, primarily due to persistent employment decline in the industrial sector. While the service sector has thus far compensated for industrial job losses, questions remain about its continued ability to generate sufficient positions.

Regional disparities continue to characterize the Czech labor market. The Ústí Region leads with a 6.7 percent unemployment rate, followed by the Moravian-Silesian Region at 6.3 percent, while Prague maintains the lowest rate at 2.9 percent. The ratio of job seekers to available positions stands at approximately 3.5 nationwide, with the most severe imbalances in Karviná (23.1), Sokolov (18), and Děčín (13) districts.
