Prague sees more visitors in first quarter of 2026

A total of 1.66 million domestic and international visitors arrived in Prague during the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the Czech Statistical Office.

The figure marks a year-on-year increase of roughly five percent, continuing a steady recovery in inbound tourism.

City officials say the growth came despite disruptions in global air travel linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Germany remained the largest source market, with 178,105 visitors, followed by the United Kingdom with 117,682 and Italy with 99,755. Czech residents accounted for about one fifth of all arrivals, maintaining a stable domestic share.

City officials point to a shift in visitor profiles and spending behaviour.

“We are successfully attracting a more solvent clientele to Prague, who are looking for quality services and are also increasing their spending. We also encourage visitors to explore areas beyond the historic centre,” said Tomáš Slabihoudek, Prague councillor for culture and tourism.

Ireland recorded the strongest percentage growth among source markets, with 23,071 visitors and a rise of 75 percent year-on-year. Officials link this increase partly to a new direct air connection between Prague and Cork, launched in the autumn.

The Irish market was also supported by a promotional campaign tied to the release of Dan Brown’s novel set in Prague, which positioned the city as a cultural destination under the theme “Prague, the City of Mystery.”

Long-haul markets also showed growth despite broader aviation challenges. Japan recorded 15,732 visitors, up 34 percent year-on-year. Taiwan reached 18,475 visitors, an increase of 22 percent, while South Korea saw 33,038 arrivals, up 13 percent.

At the same time, Prague registered a decline in visitors from Israel, down 31 percent to 29,874 arrivals. The United Arab Emirates also recorded a drop of 10 percent, with 3,747 visitors.

Data also shows a continued shift towards individual travel. Analysis based on Mastercard Tourism Insights indicates couples and solo travellers made up 38.8 percent of all visitors. Families accounted for about one third, individuals for 19 percent, and groups of friends for roughly 14 percent.

Spending data suggests a stronger presence of higher-budget travellers, with nearly 70 percent of visitors staying in four- and five-star hotels.

The city is responding to growing visitor numbers with the “Enjoy Respect Prague” campaign, which promotes responsible tourism behaviour, including respect for night-time quiet and restrictions on alcohol consumption in designated public areas.

Authorities say the aim is also to distribute tourism more evenly across the city, reducing pressure on the historic centre and encouraging visitors to explore less frequented districts.
