Prague and Stockholm Connect Through New Art Installation

Visitors in Prague and Stockholm will soon be able to communicate across borders through a pair of interactive public art installations designed to exchange anonymous messages between the two cities.

The linked installations, created by the Czech initiative Praho! project and its Swedish partner Stockholm! project, will open in Stockholm on August 20 and in Prague on August 31.

The installations are designed as private spaces intended for one visitor at a time.

After entering, participants answer a series of questions before listening to an authentic audio recording left by someone in the other city. They are then invited to record their own message, creating an ongoing exchange between residents and visitors in Prague and Stockholm.

According to the project team, the concept explores what happens when anonymous thoughts become personal through the human voice.

“The installation creates a space where you first listen to someone else—and only then can you speak,” the organizers said. “We want to explore how connecting two different cities through shared experiences can foster understanding.”

The initiative is part of Art & Design Without Borders, an international collaboration supported by the Erasmus+ programme. The project brings together organizations from the Czech Republic and Sweden to promote participatory art, community engagement and new approaches to public space.

Although they work closely together, Praho! project and Stockholm! project operate as independent non-profit organizations. Their partnership reflects a shared history rather than a branch structure.

Praho! project was founded in 2021 and focuses on participatory art in public and digital spaces. Through text-based interventions and an online platform, it has collected more than 30,000 anonymous responses addressing personal experiences and broader social issues. Those contributions have since been transformed into publications, exhibitions and artistic installations.

The concept, however, began even earlier. Founder Annamarie Čermáková first developed the idea in 2019 while studying at Stockholm University of the Arts. Returning to Sweden inspired the creation of Stockholm! project in 2025.

The project extends beyond the installations themselves. Organizers will also host workshops, educational programmes, international internships and prepare a methodology guide documenting best practices in participatory public art across different European settings.
