So we arrive at the crux of the matter.
A very serious, months-long investigation has now been completed, triggered by allegations contained in the book Mafia State.
The investigators did their job — and indeed with considerable urgency — uncovering material that was neither mentioned in the book nor known to the public.
The question now is what happens next.
Given that the Independent Authority against Corruption has demonstrated that it is, and appears to be, impartial, and given that doubts about the Law Office still linger, it is time to seriously consider whether the Authority should be granted investigative powers.
It is a difficult undertaking, but one that must be examined without delay.
At present, two years of investigations have been carried out, and in essence all the material gathered will now have to be reassembled by those who will take on the criminal inquiry. In other words, the same work will be done all over again, requiring another two years or more. For what purpose?
Someone should take the initiative.
