President Nikos Christodoulides arrived in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by ministers and a business delegation, where he received an official welcome.
Mumbai marks the first stop of his state visit, the highest level of diplomatic reception, following President Christodoulides’ February visit to Rome and the historic visit of Italian President Sergio Mattarella to Cyprus.
Upon arrival, Christodoulides, wearing traditional Indian attire, was greeted at the airport by the Governor of Maharashtra, the Prime Minister, and the Protocol Minister, walking the red carpet in the presence of an honour guard. At the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, he attended a traditional welcome ceremony featuring local dances.
Later in the afternoon, the President paid tribute to the victims of the 2008 terrorist attacks, including a Cypriot citizen, observing a minute of silence and laying a wreath at the memorial. He also signed the memorial book, noting the importance of collective action in combating terrorism.
Christodoulides then attended a Eurobank event announcing the first Bollywood film to be shot in Cyprus. Speaking at the event, he highlighted cinema as a bridge between cultures and people and emphasised Cyprus’ suitability as a filming location, noting its landscapes, hospitality, and skilled workforce. He underscored Cyprus’ commitment to supporting international productions and connecting cultural initiatives with economic development, tourism, and investment.
The President also highlighted the growing collaboration between Cyprus and India in business, culture, and talent. He referenced the work of film producers Anjali Bhushan Mago and Athina Xenidou, noting that when their film is shot in Cyprus this summer, he intends to visit the set. He thanked Eurobank, PWC, and Invest Cyprus for their support in promoting the country’s creative sector.
On Thursday, Christodoulides will attend the Cyprus-India Business Forum, meet Indian entrepreneurs and investors, inaugurate the Eurobank representative office, and visit the National Stock Exchange of India. He will focus on strengthening bilateral relations in the fields of economy, investment, shipping, technology, and innovation, positioning Cyprus as a reliable European gateway for Indian business.
The delegation will then travel to New Delhi, where on Friday the President will meet the Indian Prime Minister and the President of India, who will host an official dinner in his honour.
