The central committee of AKEL has unanimously endorsed party general secretary Stefanos Stefanou as its candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives.
Following a plenary session on Wednesday to address the upcoming parliamentary vote, the committee confirmed that Stefanou’s bid has already secured the backing of ALMA.
The central committee approved the preliminary soundings and strategy developed by the party’s political bureau, while explicitly reiterating its core opposition to any cooperation with the political right.
The leadership affirmed that, as a matter of principle, AKEL will engage in no dialogue or contact with the far right, and stated that cooperation with the Democratic Rally (DISY) is objectively out of the question.
The committee described Stefanou as possessing the necessary political and parliamentary experience, gravity, and democratic spirit required for the role of house president.
The political bureau has been instructed to continue consultations with other parliamentary parties to advance Stefanou’s candidacy and explore avenues for broader cross-party consensus.
The bureau retains the authority to assess the evolving political landscape and make final determinations regarding the voting stance of the AKEL-Left-Social Alliance parliamentary group when the House of Representatives convenes for the secret ballot.
Looking ahead, the central committee stated that the party intends to leverage the momentum generated by its electoral performance on 24 May to build a broader progressive majority ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
