Afternoon storms intensify toward the weekend in the Capital…

HAVANA TIMES – Atmospheric conditions over western Cuba continue to be influenced by a weak subtropical anticyclone centered far out in the Atlantic, creating a predominantly south-to-southeast flow in the lower levels of the atmosphere, laden with tropical moisture. Added to this are tropical waves moving south of the archipelago and the presence of an upper-level trough over the Gulf of Mexico, factors that are maintaining an unstable environment across the region.

As a result, an increase in showers, rainfall, and thunderstorms is expected during the afternoons, with greater intensity on Friday and Saturday, when episodes of heavy rainfall may occur in some localities of western and central Cuba, some of which could extend into Havana.

Over the next few days, a pattern similar to that of the previous week will persist, with partly cloudy mornings and a gradual increase in cloud cover from midday onward. Rainfall and thunderstorms will be more frequent between Friday and Sunday, while a noticeable decrease in instability is expected by Monday and Tuesday, bringing predominantly sunny or partly cloudy conditions. By Wednesday the 24th, conditions are expected to become somewhat unstable again, with the return of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

During nighttime hours, cloud cover will gradually decrease, although some lingering showers cannot be ruled out in the most unstable areas.

Winds will be predominantly from the east to northeast, with speeds ranging from 15 to 40 kilometers per hour (9 to 25 mph), strengthening slightly toward the end of the period. Relative humidity will remain high, between 65% and 95%.

Highs will range between 32 and 34°C (90 to 93°F), while the lows will fluctuate between 24 and 25°C (76 to 77°F). Sea surface temperatures will remain around 28°C (82°F).

Across the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, no tropical cyclone development is expected that would pose a threat to Cuba during the next seven days. Nevertheless, Cuba’s Meteorological Institute (Insmet) continues its routine seasonal monitoring, as the western provinces, together with the Isle of Youth, remain the areas of greatest climatological exposure during the month of June, according to the 2026 seasonal forecast.
