ZAGREB, 19 May 2026 – Zagreb’s historic funicular has officially reopened following its first comprehensive restoration in more than half a century.

The renovated funicular was formally opened by Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, Deputy Mayors Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet, alongside Croatia’s Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Nataša Mikuš Žigman and ZET Management Board President Marko Bogdanović.

Describing the project as highly symbolic for the Croatian capital, Mayor Tomašević said the funicular represents both an important part of Zagreb’s public transport history and one of the city’s best-known tourist attractions.

The Zagreb funicular, which connects the Upper Town and Lower Town, is recognised as the shortest funicular in the world.

The 66-metre journey lasts around one minute and has long been considered one of the city’s distinctive landmarks.

The restoration preserved the original exterior appearance and structural design of the funicular in line with its protected cultural heritage status. At the same time, key systems were modernised to improve passenger safety, comfort and accessibility.

The upgraded funicular has capacity for 28 passengers, including 16 seated and 12 standing places.

The total value of the project was €9.1 million including VAT. Of that amount, €5 million was secured through European Union funding under the ITU mechanism, while the remaining €4.1 million was financed by the City of Zagreb.

The works included the modernisation of infrastructure and operating systems aimed at reducing maintenance and operational costs, as well as lowering environmental impact while preserving the historic character of the landmark.

Renovation works lasted just over a year and covered the propulsion system, viaduct and both the upper and lower stations.

City officials have invited residents and visitors to experience the newly restored funicular in the coming weeks as one of Zagreb’s most recognisable attractions returns to service.
