One of Zagreb’s largest transport infrastructure projects is entering its final phase, with the expansion and reconstruction of Sarajevska Road and the construction of a new tram line nearing completion.

The project is expected to bring direct access to the tram network for around 35,000 residents of Travno, Utrina, Dugave, Hrelić and Jakuševec.

The construction site was visited on Thursday by Zagreb Deputy Mayors Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet, who said the project represented a major expansion of the city’s public transport infrastructure.

“This autumn, around 35,000 residents of Travno, Utrina, Dugave, Hrelić and Jakuševec will gain direct access to the tram network for the first time,” Dolenec said.

She described the project as one of the largest strategic investments of the current city administration.

The works include the construction of 1.8 kilometres of new road infrastructure and 2.25 kilometres of tram track. Sarajevska Road is being expanded to its full profile, with three lanes for cars in each direction, alongside new pedestrian and cycling paths and noise barriers.

The project also includes eight new tram stops and a new tram terminus.

The total value of the works is nearly €25 million, excluding VAT, with the project being financed entirely from the City of Zagreb budget.

“For decades, people have talked about a tram line on Sarajevska Road, and very soon it will become a reality, together with the new road,” Korlaet said. “The most demanding part of the works is now behind us and we are entering the final stage.”

A significant part of the supporting infrastructure has already been completed. This includes sewage and stormwater drainage systems, water and heating pipelines, a digital communications network, public lighting and HEP utility installations.

All noise barriers have also been completed, while the eastern carriageway between the Zapruđe roundabout and Aleksandra Brdarića Street has been finished.

A new tram line, including its overhead contact network, has also been constructed along that section.

The remaining works include completing the final road surfaces, asphalt works on the remaining sections and landscaping.

On the tram infrastructure, work is nearing completion on a temporary tram terminus, the installation of the remaining rails and the overhead contact network, as well as other works required before tram services can begin.

The temporary terminus is being built so that the new tram line can enter service before the construction of the planned viaduct near the Ranžirni kolodvor railway yard by Hrvatske autoceste.

This will allow tram services to begin as soon as the works on Sarajevska Road are completed, rather than waiting for the later construction of the viaduct.

The project is expected to improve public transport connections in the southern part of Zagreb while also significantly expanding the city’s tram network for the first time in a quarter of a century.
