From the Tamburica House and Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić House to traditional flavours and riverside walks, Slavonski Brod reveals a side of continental Croatia that captivates from the very first visit.

Situated on the banks of the River Sava, Slavonski Brod is one of those Croatian cities that surprises visitors from the moment they arrive. Rich in history, cultural heritage and warm hospitality, it successfully blends tradition, literature, music and gastronomy, offering an authentic taste of Slavonia.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to explore some of the city’s most fascinating attractions, with the Tamburica House, the Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić House and the distinctive flavours of the Brod region leaving a particularly strong impression.

Tamburica House: Where Slavonia’s Musical Heritage Comes to Life

One of Slavonski Brod’s most unique attractions is the Tamburica House, a modern interpretation centre located within the historic Brod Fortress.

Dedicated to the tamburica, the instrument that has become synonymous with Slavonian identity, the centre presents the story of the instrument, its development and its significance in Croatian musical heritage through a highly interactive and engaging experience.

Visitors are immediately drawn to the impressive world’s largest bisernica, a remarkable exhibit that symbolises the deep connection between Slavonia and tamburica music.

In the Home of Croatia’s Andersen

Slavonski Brod is inseparably linked to Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, one of Croatia’s most celebrated writers and the author of works that have enchanted generations of readers. Often referred to as the “Croatian Andersen”, her literary legacy remains deeply woven into the city’s identity.

In the heart of the city stands Brlić House, the family home where the writer lived and created some of her most famous works. A visit to this historic residence provides a fascinating glimpse into the private life of the Brlić family and the era in which some of Croatia’s most beloved literary classics were written.

Particularly impressive are the preserved original salons, library rooms, bedrooms and numerous personal belongings that offer insight into the daily life of one of Croatia’s most distinguished families. Walking through the rooms where the worlds of The Brave Adventures of Lapitch and Croatian Tales of Long Ago were created leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

A City Rich in History and Spiritual Heritage

Adding to the city’s cultural appeal are the Franciscan Monastery and the Church of the Holy Trinity, among the finest examples of Baroque religious architecture in continental Croatia. Their architectural beauty and historical significance reflect centuries of spiritual and cultural development in this important Slavonian centre.

Zander: A Local Speciality Shaped by Life on the Sava

After exploring the city’s cultural landmarks, it was time to discover the flavours of the region. At Restaurant Uno, we sampled one of the Sava’s most prized freshwater fish species – zander, a traditional delicacy that has featured on local tables for generations.

Expertly prepared, the dish impressed with its simplicity and quality, showcasing another side of Slavonian cuisine. While the region is often associated with hearty meat dishes, freshwater fish has long played an important role in the culinary traditions of towns and cities along the Sava.

Perhaps the most defining feature of Slavonski Brod is its connection to the River Sava. The riverside promenade is one of the city’s favourite gathering places, offering residents and visitors alike a peaceful setting in which to relax and enjoy the views.

It is here that the true spirit of Slavonski Brod comes to life – a harmonious blend of history, culture and everyday life. As the Sava gently flows eastwards, the city reveals its most attractive side, one that continues to draw visitors back time and time again.
