July the 27th, 2026 – The entire island of Cres is stunning, but Sveti Ivan beach takes it a step further. If we’re being honest, it takes it many steps further, as a 50-minute hike is needed to reach this hidden paradise. Trust us, it’s so worth it.
Hidden beneath the ancient hilltop village of Lubenice on the island of Cres lies one of Croatia’s most spectacular beaches, Sveti Ivan beach. Putni kofer reveals that it is best known for its white pebbles, crystal-clear waters and particularly dramatic surroundings. It is very often considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Croatian coast (and that’s a challenging title to receive in itself).
The beach sits in a secluded bay beneath the historic settlement of Lubenice, which is perched high on a cliff overlooking the Adriatic. Surrounded by steep rocks and untouched nature, Sveti Ivan offers the kind of peaceful atmosphere that is becoming increasingly rare on the Croatian coast.
Part of what keeps this beach so special is also what makes it difficult to reach. Visitors who choose to walk from Lubenice must follow a steep trail that takes around 50 minutes downhill, and the return journey can be even more challenging, especially during the intense summer heat. Proper footwear and enough water are essential, and we’d go as far as to discourage anyone doing this during the height of summer.
Because of the demanding access, even during the height of summer Sveti Ivan usually avoids the large crowds found at many other Croatian beaches. Those who make the journey are rewarded with incredible views, peaceful surroundings and some of the clearest waters on the Adriatic.
The beach can also be reached by sea, either with a private boat, organised excursion or water taxi. Nearby is another natural attraction, Plava Grota, a sea cave where sunlight creates beautiful blue reflections inside the cave.
Above the beach sits Lubenice, one of the oldest settlements on the Croatian islands. Located on a 378-metre-high cliff, the village has a history stretching back more than 4,000 years, with archaeological remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages found in the surrounding area.
Once one of Cres’ most important settlements, Lubenice is now home to only two permanent residents. However, during the summer months, visitors arrive to explore its ancient stone streets, admire the views and discover one of Croatia’s most breathtaking beaches down below.
