Croatia has officially welcomed nearly 500 new police officers, with this year’s class seeing the highest number of women to date.

At a ceremony held at the “Prvi hrvatski redarstvenik” Police Academy in Zagreb, 483 candidates took their solemn oath after successfully completing the adult secondary education programme for police officers.

Of these, 119 were women – almost a quarter of the total intake.

The 20th generation of trainees achieved impressive results, with 89 graduating with honours and 27 achieving the top mark of 5.0.

Academy head Josip Ćelić reminded graduates of the symbolic importance of the institution, where Croatia’s first police unit was formed in 1990.

“Every action and decision you make affects those around you. Serve citizens with dignity and remember – a modern police officer must be a friend, helper and protector of all,” he said.

Police Director General Nikola Milina praised the progress in gender equality, noting that “this generation reflects Croatia in miniature”.

He highlighted both the high percentage of women and the dedication to study, with almost a quarter of graduates earning honours.

This year’s class had already taken part in important national events, including the 30th anniversary parade of Operation Storm, while the police as an institution also marks 35 years since the formation of key special units.

Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister Davor Božinović underlined the significance of security for Croatia. “Security is our greatest capital. It makes Croatia unique. But there is no security without trust, and trust comes through honest relations with citizens,” he told the graduates.

Božinović highlighted not only the demanding training and professional practice but also the involvement of trainees in community, cultural and humanitarian activities.

These included assisting during Advent in Zagreb, helping at the Rijeka Carnival, volunteering at concerts, donating blood, and joining the “Ana Rukavina” foundation.

Through Erasmus+ exchange, they also hosted colleagues from Lithuania, while the academy’s rowing teams competed for the first time at the traditional Maraton lađa.

Addressing the graduates, Božinović emphasised values above all.

“Humanity, empathy, responsibility – that is what we expect from you. Live the values the Croatian police stand for. You are the pillars of our society’s security. Always remember – security is our greatest capital, and you are its guardians.”

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Petra Mikulić pledged their commitment.

“Our task is to grow into officers who, through credibility, professionalism and dedication, will protect peace, security and fundamental rights. Let us be the pride of the Croatian police. Beneath our uniform beats a heart that protects, serves and believes.”
