New York Times Spotlights Gorgeous Istria

September the 16th, 2025 – The New York Times is no stranger to praising Croatian destinations, and this time beautiful Istria is in the spotlight.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the New York Times article praises and further positions Istria as an authentic and prestigious gastronomic destination that attracts a global audience in search of an incredible autumn experience.

The The New York Times included Istria in its top selection of regions with the most interesting autumn gastronomic festivals in Europe, with a special focus on the white truffle season in Istria.

The author of the article, Alex Crevar, was supported in the preparation of the article by the Istria County Tourist Board. By collecting various necessary pieces of information and finding interesting facts throughout all stages of the selection of destinations and events for the thematic article, Istria’s seasonal truffle offer will likely capture readers.

The New York Times describes Istria as a peninsula with a rich agricultural and culinary tradition, where numerous festivals dedicated to extra virgin olive oil, cheese, prosciutto, wine and seafood are held from late August until December. However, the focus of attention is on the rare and highly valued Istrian white truffles, which are found in the forests along the Mirna River and reach exceptionally high prices on the market.

The article highlights some of the more significant events during the truffle season, such as the NOVA Eroica Istria Truffle Tour cycling event taking place on September the 21st in northwestern Istria, the Teran and Truffle Festival in Motovun on October the 18th and 19th, and the Buzet Truffle Festival on November the 8th and 9th. A special place in the article has also been occupied by the Zigante Truffle Days event in Livade, which stretches over five weekends and brings together international enthusiasts and experts through tastings, auctions, workshops and guided truffle tours.

Adriano Zigante’s statements emphasise the very deep roots of truffles in Istria’s local culture and identity, with the message that “Istria is tasted through the flavour of its truffles”.

“Highlighted articles about Istria in such important media outlets are extremely important, mainly because together with the system of local tourist boards and hoteliers, the Istria County Tourist Board invests significant efforts in promotion on the American market, as one of the most prosperous markets in the world. Furthermore, Istria is the “preferred partner” of several prestigious associations, including Virtuoso, Maritz and SITE – major players in the premium tourism sector, both in the leisure segment and in the incentive travel segment, respectively MICE tourism. PR activities like articles of this type in such influential media outlets only further strengthen the image of Istria over on the US market”, said Denis Ivošević, director of the Istria County Tourist Board.
