Archaeological investigations have begun at the Golden Gate of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
The project focuses on the former octagonal towers that once flanked the Golden Gate, as well as the gate’s entrance itself.
Particular attention will be given to determining the original threshold of the gate, which was first noted in 1910 by Austrian architect and historian George Niemann.

The research will be carried out in several phases over the course of five months.
Experts say the findings will play a key role in enabling further restoration and presentation of the ancient infrastructure, ensuring that the area around the Golden Gate is preserved and enhanced for future generations.

Once completed, the results will inform plans for the long-term arrangement and conservation of the Golden Gate area, reinforcing its place as both a cultural treasure and a symbol of Split’s rich history.
