The Croatian National Bank, in cooperation with the Croatian Mint, has announced a new numismatic release dedicated to the falkuša – the legendary fishing boat from the island of Vis.
The gold and silver collector’s coins, titled Gajeta falkuša, will be available from 9 September 2025 at 9 am.
This release marks the first edition in the new Croatian Ships series, created in honour of Croatia’s rich maritime heritage and the preservation of traditions on its most remote inhabited island – Vis.
A symbol of Adriatic tradition
The falkuša is considered one of the most important traditional vessels of the Adriatic and a lasting symbol of Croatia’s seafaring history.
Designed by fishermen from Komiža, the vessel was known for its speed, strength and carrying capacity. Its unique feature was its removable wooden side boards – known as “falke” – which allowed it to transform from a fishing boat into a sailing boat.
The last original falkuša sank in 1986, but after more than a decade of research, faithful replicas were built. Today, three replicas keep the spirit of the falkuša alive, representing the identity of Komiža and its maritime tradition.
The coins are struck to the highest quality – proof – and will be available in four versions:
• Gold 1 oz, €100 face value – limited to 150 pieces
• Gold ¼ oz, €25 face value – limited to 250 pieces

• Silver 1 oz, €4 face value – limited to 1,500 pieces
• Silver 2 oz, €6 face value – limited to 500 pieces

The artistic design comes from academic sculptor Jelena Mavrić Varga. The obverse depicts two gajete falkuše braving the waves of the Adriatic, while the reverse shows the Komiža Kaštel with the three surviving replicas of the vessel.

The Gajeta falkuša coins will be available for purchase from 9 September 2025 at 9 am via the official webshop of the Croatian Mint and through authorised partners. Delivery will take place during September and October.
