September the 17th, 2025 – The largest private oncology hospital in not only Croatia but in the entire immediate region is set to be constructed in Zagreb. The project is worth a staggering 106 million euros.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the Medikol Group has officially marked the start of construction work on the Special Oncology Hospital Medikol Medical Centre. This will be by far the largest private institution of its kind in Croatia and the wider region. The project, worth 106 million euros, was granted the status of a Strategic Investment Project by the Croatian Government back in 2023 because it represents a key step forward in increasing the capacity for treating oncology patients.
The largest private oncology hospital in the region is being built in Zagreb in three phases on an area spanning 55,000 square metres, bringing a completely new level of oncology care to patients. In the first phase, which will be completed by the end of 2026, a radiotherapy centre, nuclear medicine departments, radiology and a polyclinic will be built, and more than 130 people will be employed. The hospital plans to receive its first patients as early as early 2027, and upon completion of the entire project, Medikol Medical Centre will employ 562 individuals.
a 106 million euro price tag
On this occasion, the CEO of Medikol Group Ivan Rajković and the director of Medikol Polyclinic Ivanka Trastenjak-Rajković signed the “Charter for the Future”, bringing in symbolic items, including the key to the first PET/CT device, a vial of radioisotope produced by RMC in Zagreb and a USB with the documentation of Medikol’s development, in a time capsule that will only be opened in 2075.
“We’re investing 106 million euros in this project. Upon completion, the future hospital will employ more than 560 people. The status of strategic importance granted to us by the government confirms that this is a project of national interest. Every single euro invested in the largest private oncology hospital here in Zagreb will remain in Croatia – for the benefit of our patients, our healthcare system and the economy,” emphasised Rajković.
the european and national plan to fight cancer
The project is fully complementary to the goals of the European Plan to Fight Cancer and the National Plan to Fight Cancer 2020–2030. It also has the ambition to develop into a regional centre of excellence for oncology. The vision of this hospital is based on joint action by the public and private sectors in the fight against cancer, with the patient positioned at the very heart of the system. Patients will be provided with comprehensive care plans all in one place – from arrival at the institution to their final diagnosis within just two weeks, from diagnosis to the start of treatment within two days, and for palliative radiotherapy, treatment tailored to their situation will be available in a single day.
The Envoy of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia and State Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Tomislav Dulibić, emphasised: “The Ministry of Health welcomes every investment in the Croatian healthcare system, and we see this centre as a truly valuable contribution to improving the quality of healthcare. We’d like to congratulate the investors on their decision to realise this investment in Zagreb, because the support of the local community is an important factor in the implementation of the entire project. The Ministry of Health believes that the synergy of the public and private sectors, with clearly defined relationships and transparency, can contribute to further strengthening the entire healthcare system and ensure higher quality healthcare for everyone in Croatia.”
reducing cancer mortality and improving quality of life for oncology patients
As stated, a massive 106 million euros have been secured for the implementation of the first phase of the construction of the largest private oncology hospital on a large area in Zagreb. It will all be carried out using a combination of the Medikol Group’s own funds and bank project financing. The construction is being carried out by a consortium of contractors; Texomolior d.o.o., Franc Mont d.o.o. and Art Metali d.o.o., while the professional supervision and project management is being carried out by the company Interkonzalting d.o.o. With the construction of the Medikol Medical Centre, Croatia will gain the largest private specialised oncology hospital in the entire region. In addition to the existing capacities of the public healthcare system, it will ensure faster and higher-quality access to cancer treatment, with a clear goal – firmly reducing cancer mortality and improving the quality of life of all oncology patients.
