RIJEKA, 15 July 2026 – Ten foreign police officers from five countries will support Croatian police across the Kvarner region during this year’s tourist season as part of the long-running Safe Tourist Destination international cooperation project.
The officers were officially introduced on Tuesday at Gat Karoline Riječke in Rijeka, where representatives of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Police Administration welcomed them ahead of their deployment.
Police chief Hari Brnad said the initiative has become a strong example of successful international police cooperation over many years, helping maintain a high level of safety for both residents and visitors.
The welcoming ceremony was also attended by Kvarner Tourist Board director Marijana Kalčić and Rijeka Tourist Board director Antonija Kardum, who wished the visiting officers a successful summer and an enjoyable stay in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
The Safe Tourist Destination project has been running since 2006, with the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Police Administration participating since 2007.
Over nearly two decades, it has developed into one of Croatia’s most successful examples of international police cooperation, supporting tourist safety while reinforcing the country’s reputation as a safe holiday destination.
This summer, a total of 10 foreign police officers from Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Serbia and Germany will be deployed across the region. Seven officers have already begun their assignments, while a further three will arrive during August.
The officers currently deployed are:
• Andrej Ševc and Ivana Strečková from Slovakia, assigned to the Crikvenica Police Station.
• Drago Butara from Slovenia, assigned to Krk Police Station.
• Marzena Kwasiborska and Mateusz Wójcik from Poland, assigned to Rijeka’s First Police Station.
• Veljko Ćosić from Serbia, assigned to Opatija Police Station.
• Manuel Knab from Germany, assigned to Mali Lošinj Police Station, including the Cres branch.
The visiting officers do not exercise police powers or carry out law enforcement duties in Croatia.
Instead, they work alongside Croatian police by assisting tourists from their home countries, helping overcome language barriers, providing information and improving communication during the busy summer season.

Croatian authorities say the initiative enhances the sense of security for visitors while highlighting the importance of international police cooperation in ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for everyone visiting the Kvarner region.
