ZAGREB, 23 July 2026 – Certain third country nationals in Croatia who are subject to the visa regime must undergo a mandatory health examination before extending their temporary residence permits, the Croatian Institute of Public Health has confirmed in a statement.
The requirement is set out in the regulations governing the residence of third country nationals in Croatia, those from countries that require a visa to enter Croatia, i.e. the Schengen area.
The content of the examination is determined by a decision of the Minister of Health based on the Act on the Protection of the Population from Infectious Diseases.
The examination includes a health interview and review of medical documentation, a physical examination, a chest X-ray, stool testing for certain infectious disease pathogens and blood tests for specific infections.
The examinations are carried out by public health institutes. Workers should attend the institute responsible for their place of residence with a referral issued by their employer.
The employer is responsible for arranging the appointment with the relevant public health institute by telephone or email.
The cost of the examination is covered by the employer, based on an invoice issued by the public health institute after the foreign worker attends the examination.
The basic examination includes a physical examination, chest X-ray and interpretation of the image, stool testing for Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi, blood tests for markers of blood-borne infectious diseases, and catch-up vaccination where necessary.
Workers who have results from recent previous examinations, such as a chest X-ray, are advised to bring them with them. This may help avoid repeating examinations that have been carried out recently.
Within several days of attending the examination, the person receives a certificate confirming that the examination has been completed. The document also includes recommendations for any further medical assessment that may be required, as well as a catch-up vaccination plan where necessary.
The Croatian Institute of Public Health has also made available the referral form for employers and instructions on how to prepare for the examination.
In Zagreb, examinations at the Croatian Institute of Public Health are carried out by the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Service at Rockefellerova 2, second floor.
