June the 18th, 2026 – Bhutan has officially recognised the Republic of Croatia, opening up the pathway for new bilateral relations and deeper cooperation. Only Tonga and Niger still don’t officially recognise the country.
This recognition comes over 30 years after the rest of the world, but it marks a very significant step in diplomatic relations between the two countries and further strengthening Croatia’s presence on the global stage in that part of the world.
The decision by the Kingdom of Bhutan represents an important moment for both nations, creating new opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including diplomacy, culture, tourism, sustainability and international cooperation.
Although geographically distant, Croatia and Bhutan do actually (and surprisingly) share a number of values reflected in their approach to international relations, including respect for sovereignty, peaceful cooperation and the importance of dialogue between nations. The two countries have already had contact through multilateral organisations, particularly within the framework of the United Nations, where both have participated in discussions on global challenges.
Croatian officials welcomed Bhutan’s recognition as a positive development that contributes to closer ties between the two countries. The move is expected to provide a foundation for future cooperation and greater exchange between Croatia and Bhutan, despite their different histories, cultures and regions.
Bhutan, a small Himalayan kingdom known for its unique approach to development and its focus on Gross National Happiness, has become increasingly recognised internationally for its environmental policies, cultural preservation and emphasis on sustainable growth. Croatia, meanwhile, has built a strong international profile since gaining independence in the early 1990s, particularly through its membership in the European Union and its growing role in global tourism and diplomacy.
The recognition also highlights Croatia’s continued efforts to strengthen diplomatic connections around the world. With Bhutan joining the group of countries that formally recognise Croatia, Zagreb’s network of international partnerships continues to expand.
The establishment of closer relations between the two countries may also create opportunities for future cooperation in tourism, an area where both nations have strong identities. Croatia’s Adriatic coast and historic cities and Bhutan’s unique landscapes, traditions and cultural heritage represent two very different but internationally recognised destinations.
Bhutan’s recognition of Croatia is being seen as a symbolic but meaningful step, bringing the two countries closer together and opening the possibility of deeper cooperation in the years ahead.
