China launches online visa application system for US amid drive to boost visitor numbers

China’s diplomatic missions in the United States have launched a new online visa application system as part of its efforts to boost tourist revenues and people-to-people exchanges.

The process previously required at least two in-person visits: first to submit application materials and later to provide biometric information and submit their passports after initial approval.

But starting from September 30, the first part can be done online, the Chinese embassy said on Friday. The second part remains unchanged.

A similar system will also be introduced in Canada on the same date.

The system, which covers all types of visa, has already been launched in several countries, including Japan and Spain.

“Easier visas, smoother trips!” Xie Feng, the Chinese ambassador to the US, wrote on social media on Friday.
