Mansfield-based photographer prepares to turn hobby into career

A Mansfield-based photographer “exhausted of his nine-to-five” is turning his passion for wedding photography into a full-time career.

With a degree in photography from Nottingham Trent University, Hugh Boyd, of Hugh Boyd Photography, has spent his working life behind the camera.

But despite his long-standing passion for photography, he has never had the opportunity to turn his love of capturing the happiest day of people’s lives into a full-time career – until now.

The 32-year-old, who lives in The Quarry, has photographed more than 20 weddings in his spare time, including at Mansfield’s Carr Bank Wedding Venue.

Hugh, who grew up in Southwell and went to The Minster School, said: “I know leaving my job to pursue this dream is a risk, but after years of wanting to make it a reality, it’s finally one I’m ready to take.

“I’ve always wanted to make wedding photography my full-time job, but with the cost of everything rising and many jobs in the creative industry falling below industry standards, creative professionals are frequently paid unfairly for the skills, experience and work required.

“Spending eight hours a day, five days a week in a role that provides little personal gratification is the story of millions of people, but it’s not a sustainable way to spend the rest of your working life. Life is too short, so you should do what you love and do it honestly.”

In June, Hugh launched his new website, Hugh Boyd Photography, which features a wide portfolio of images, testimonials and packages. He will also be launching a blog dedicated to providing couples with free advice, tips and predictions. The business has already received five-star reviews on Google, with clients praising Hugh’s communication, professionalism and willingness to go above and beyond.

“I love to capture weddings that are full of personality, and I pour everything into making sure they are done justice. Weddings aren’t photoshoots, they’re a collection of moments you’ll never experience again and I find great fulfilment delivering galleries to couples that they’ll keep forever,” Hugh said.

Having married his girlfriend of 10 years in August, Hugh has first-hand knowledge of how much goes into planning a wedding and how quickly the day itself can pass. His own experience has only reinforced his passion for capturing the genuine moments, emotions and memories that couples will want to look back on for years to come.

“I do everything I possibly can to keep things calm, easy-going, and stress-free, whether couples are completely camera shy or love being in front of the lens,” he added. “My goal is simple: to create timeless images that bring you back to exactly how your wedding day felt.”
