CameroonOnline.ORG | The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially terminated the contract of men’s national team head coach Pape Thiaw following a disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The dismissal applies to Thiaw and his entire technical backroom staff.
In a public statement released on Sunday, the FSF Executive Committee noted that the decision was made after a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and the overall trajectory of the national team, concluding that a managerial change was necessary to protect the best interests of Senegalese football.
World Cup Campaign Collapse
Senegal entered the 2026 tournament with high expectations after defeating Morocco in January to claim the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. However, their World Cup campaign in North America struggled for consistency from the outset.
During the group stage, the Teranga Lions suffered consecutive defeats to France and Norway. They managed to progress to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams primarily due to a substantial five-goal victory over Iraq.
The defining moment of the tournament occurred during their Round of 32 matchup against Belgium in Seattle on July 1. Senegal held a commanding 2-0 lead until the 86th minute of regular time. In the closing minutes, the squad conceded two late goals before ultimately allowing a decisive penalty in extra time, culminating in a 3-2 defeat and immediate elimination.
Context of the Dismissal
Thiaw, 45, leaves his post after 19 months in charge. His tenure was already facing upcoming logistical challenges; he was scheduled to begin a five-match continental ban this September at the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The suspension was handed down by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after Thiaw led a player walk-off to protest a penalty awarded to Morocco during the 2025 continental tournament.
Additionally, Senegal’s previous AFCON championship victory in Morocco has been a subject of ongoing administrative dispute, having been overturned by CAF. The FSF is currently appealing that ruling through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Looking Forward
According to reports from French publication L’Equipe, the federation is already considering replacements to steer the national team into the upcoming qualification cycle. Former France international and World Cup winner Patrick Vieira, who was born in Dakar, has emerged as an early favorite for the vacant position.
Thiaw’s departure reflects a broader trend of managerial turnover following the tournament; more than a quarter of the coaches competing at the 2026 World Cup have either resigned or been dismissed following their respective team eliminations.
