Synopsis: Ministry warns of limited rainfall ahead, directing officials to safeguard supply ahead of seasonal transition.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology urged authorities and the public to conserve water as the rainy season ends, with El Nino conditions forecast to persist through February and the northeast monsoon bringing low rainfall.

The World Meteorological Organisation reported a near-100% likelihood of El Nino continuing until February, based on forecasts from global climate prediction centres

As Cambodia transitions from the rainy season to the dry season, the ministry instructed provincial and municipal departments to protect water sources, including reservoirs and natural lakes, and assess available water resources.

Departments were directed to prepare water-use plans prioritising domestic consumption and dry season rice cultivation.

Measures support water management during a period of declining rainfall. The outlook indicates the southwest monsoon will weaken as the northeast monsoon takes over, though thunderstorms and strong winds may occur.

The ministry called on institutions, local authorities and the public to cooperate in conserving water resources and using water efficiently through the dry season.

Authorities are preparing to manage supplies for household and agricultural needs amid changing seasonal conditions.

Further monitoring and local forecasts will determine how conditions develop across Cambodia.

El Nino is a climate pattern where sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean exceed average levels.

It alters atmospheric circulation, shifting rainfall and temperature patterns worldwide. Impacts differ regionally and seasonally.
