Over 1,300 killed in Cambodia road crashes this year

Traffic incidents killed more than 1,300 people in Cambodia during the first 10 months of 2026, according to a National Police report released Tuesday.

In October alone, road crashes claimed 147 lives, averaging nearly five deaths daily.

Interior Minister Sar Sokha noted in a social media post that speeding and failure to yield the right of way caused the majority of crashes, with most incidents occurring at night.

Deputy National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Chev Hak said motorcyclists represented the vast majority of casualties, with roughly 70 per cent of those victims not wearing helmets.

Road crashes remain the leading cause of death and injury in the South-East Asian country. Beyond the human toll, crashes cost the nation an estimated $466 million annually, according to a joint report by the United Nations Development Programme and the National Road Safety Committee. Xinhua
