A young couple, who had planned to get married next year, have drowned in Kampong Speu province.

The tragedy occurred at 3.40pm on Tuesday, in village 3, Yay Mao Pech Nil commune, Phnom Sruoch district.

District police named the deceased as Meng Kimhour, a factory worker living in Village 3, Yay Mao Pech Nil commune and Phon Phanna, a farmer living in Prey Sam Lahn village, Sam Rong commune, Svay Antar district, Prey Veng province.

According to Meng Sokhai, the victim’s older brother, the couple and younger sister, Heng Toi Ai, drove to a stream for a swim, about two kilometres from their home on Tuesday at 3.30pm.

At 4pm, Toi Ai ran back and told Sokhai about the tragedy; he and a friend drove to the stream to search for the bodies.

After searching for a while, they saw the bodies, pulled them from the stream and took them to Trapeang Kraleung Referral Hospital.

However, on arrival, the staff informed them that they were dead.

The victims’ bodies have now been handed over to their families for traditional funerals.
