Cambodia reports Thai troops moved post, digging trenches at border

Synopsis: Phnom Penh urges strict adherence to bilateral peace agreements, citing ASEAN monitor findings as forces observe military activity in Veal Veng district.

Cambodia reported that Thai troops moved an observation post and continued digging trenches around 20 metres forward from their previous position along the Pursat border, raising concerns over ceasefire compliance.

According to a Defence Ministry statement yesterday, the Cambodian Liaison Group facilitated a mission by the ASEAN Observer Team at 9.20am to monitor the CH1 Checkpoint in Veal Veng district. The team aimed to observe, verify and report on developments while assessing compliance with agreed ceasefire measures.

The ministry said observers recorded the movement of the Thai post and ongoing trench excavations closer to Cambodian territory.

Reiterating its support for the ASEAN Observer Team, Cambodia stressed the importance of strengthening the body’s mandate to verify implementation, promote transparency and ensure accountability.

The ministry called on Thailand to strictly comply with the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee, signed on December 27, 2025 and the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement, signed on October 26, 2025.

The government is dedicated to executing agreements peacefully under international law to secure lasting stability, the ministry said.

Resolving border issues is a priority as the government acts to protect national territory, Prime Minister Hun Manet said.

Speaking at a food relief event for flood-hit families in Pursat yesterday, Mr Hun Manet said the government is addressing border issues through established channels.

He noted that demarcation and protection require specialised technical expertise, modern technology and clear legal documents under international law.

He added Cambodia relies on internationally recognised maps, advanced technology and bilateral negotiations based on national sovereignty to protect its territory for future generations.

Emphasising stability, Mr Hun Manet said the expression “Thank You, Peace” carries weight during challenges such as natural disasters. He urged Cambodians to maintain unity to protect peace, describing it as essential for national development and delivering public assistance.
