Arusha, Tanzania Ministers and senior officials from across the East African Community (EAC) are meeting in Arusha this week to shape the bloc’s next development strategy, review its long-term vision, and address persistent barriers to trade.

The 35th Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers Responsible for EAC Affairs and Planning, alongside the 58th Extraordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers, kicked off on Sunday at the EAC headquarters. The high-level sessions, running through Sept. 6, have drawn delegates from all eight member states.

At the heart of the discussions is the Draft 7th EAC Development Strategy, which will guide the region’s integration priorities for the coming years. Ministers are also reviewing terms of reference to update the EAC Vision 2050 and to craft a regional language policy aimed at strengthening cultural and economic ties.

The meetings come at a time when businesses across East Africa continue to grapple with non-tariff barriers (NTBs) that slow down cross-border trade. Officials say the elimination of such barriers remains a top priority.

In parallel, the 58th Extraordinary Council is focusing on strengthening the EAC’s institutional capacity. Key items include clarifying job descriptions, reviewing recruitment procedures under the quota system, and ensuring fair representation of all partner states in staffing.

The sessions began with senior officials’ deliberations, to be followed by coordination committee meetings on Sept. 3 and ministerial sessions on Sept. 5 and 6.

EAC leaders say the outcome of these meetings will play a crucial role in accelerating economic growth and regional stability.
