Burundi’s CNDD-FDD reappoints Ndikuriyo as its Secretary General

Burundi’s ruling party CNDD-FDD has reappointed Secretary General Révérien Ndikuriyo and his deputy, Cyriaque Nshimirimana, to another five-year terms following an extraordinary national congress, that was held in the country’s capital Gitega on Sunday.

The congress was held under the leadership of President Évariste Ndayishimiye in his role as head of the Council of the Wise and brought together senior party leaders and delegates from across the country.

The National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) emerged from a former rebel movement that fought during Burundi’s civil war and transformed into a political party following the 2000 Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement.

It came to power in 2005 and has dominated Burundian politics since then, overseeing successive governments and maintaining a strong presence across state institutions.

President Ndayishimiye, who took office in 2020, is a senior party figure and plays a central role in guiding its internal structures.

Ndikuriyo, a former Senate president, is regarded as a key figure in party organization and mobilization, while Nshimirimana is credited by officials with strengthening internal coordination. The leadership renewal, officials said, was conducted in line with party rules and reflects confidence in the current leadership’s ability to maintain cohesion and discipline.
