China’s A.I.-Chip Rush Hits the Market: MetaX’s 700% Jump

Key Points

  • MetaX jumped 693% on debut after a $596 million IPO, signaling intense domestic appetite for AI-chip “national champions.”
  • Beijing’s push to replace foreign GPUs is unlocking capital fast, but leading-edge manufacturing remains the real bottleneck.
  • The rally is a referendum on industrial strategy—and a warning about how quickly policy themes can become priced perfection.

MetaX Integrated Circuits went public in Shanghai and instantly became a symbol of China’s race to build its own AI hardware. The stock was sold to investors at 104.66 yuan, opened around 700 yuan, touched 895 yuan, and finished near 829.9 yuan.

That is a 693% first-day gain—on a company that is still loss-making, controls about 1% of China’s AI-chip market, and is valued at roughly 50 times its 2024 sales.

The surface story is obvious: money is flooding into anything tied to artificial intelligence. The story behind it is more geopolitical than technological.

China’s largest AI users—cloud providers, telecoms, large industrial groups—want more control over supply after years of restrictions and uncertainty around top-end U.S. chips.

MetaX, founded by former AMD Shanghai engineers led by Chen Weiliang, is being rewarded for fitting that national priority. Rival Moore Threads’ roughly 400% debut added fuel.

The scale investors are betting on is enormous. Forecasts cited around the listing project China’s AI-chip sales reaching $189 billion by 2029, up from $54 billion in 2026.

If that market materializes, even “good-enough” domestic chips could generate huge revenues, because the volume of AI servers and inference workloads is exploding.

Manufacturing Is the Real Bottleneck

But the difficult part of the plan is not designing a chip. It is producing cutting-edge chips cheaply and reliably. Advanced lithography—the tooling that draws features so small they are measured in a handful of atoms—still sits behind export licensing and allied supply chains.

Reports say China is testing a prototype extreme-ultraviolet tool but has not produced working chips with it, with timelines discussed into 2028–2030.

Meanwhile, restrictions on the most capable deep-ultraviolet systems remain a real constraint, and workarounds like multi-patterning add cost and complexity.

Online enthusiasm has turned MetaX into a headline about self-sufficiency. The harder test will arrive later: whether today’s capital builds durable capability, or whether it simply inflated a policy narrative into a bubble before the engineering catches up.
