Srebrenica the Day after: How is the City we remember once a Year living?

Srebrenica, the day after July 11, the collective funeral and burial of the victims of the genocide committed in July 1995, is half empty again. After thousands of people yesterday attended the commemoration and burial of 10 victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, today there are only locals who continue the fight for life. The BHRT team is with them.

When the cameras are turned off on July 11, the delegations leave Potočare, and all those who came to pay tribute to the victims of the genocide go home, silence descends on Potočare and Srebrenica, and its residents continue to live their daily lives.

Today, you can see deserted streets in that city, partly because it is Sunday, and partly because there are only a little over a thousand people living in Srebrenica today, at least in the town itself. Those whom our team found there say that they will be happy if five thousand people live in the whole municipality.

According to the 2013 census, more than 13,000 people lived in Srebrenica. The trend of young people leaving is like in any other small Bosnian town, its residents believe.

Those who stayed say they are satisfied with their choice, that they consciously decided to stay, and that life in Srebrenica is beautiful.
