Ministry Dismisses Allegations: We Did Not Ban Protests; Students Have the Right to Seek Justice

“The tragedy that struck our community has left an indelible mark on all our hearts. Today, above all, we stand in silence with the family of the deceased young man, sharing a pain that no words can ease. We send our injured student strength for her recovery, and to her loved ones we promise that they are not alone in this struggle,” the Ministry of Upbringing and Education of Sarajevo Canton said in a statement released today.

We are aware of the unrest prevailing in our schools and on the streets. We want to clearly state: the Ministry is not, nor will it ever be, an obstacle to your right to seek justice. The voice of our students proves that you have learned the most important lesson, a lesson in civic courage and empathy.

All claims about alleged instructions from the Ministry regarding punishment, identification checks, or restrictions on the freedom of movement of students wishing to protest are false. We have never sent such a directive to schools. School is a space of freedom and responsibility, not coercion. It is our duty to ensure that the teaching process continues smoothly, but we will never do so at the expense of your dignity or your right to grieve and express your views. Attendance record rules exist solely for your safety, so that we know at all times that you are safe, not to restrict you.

Dear students, your teachers and school counselors are not only there to grade you and teach subjects, but also to support you. We encourage you to articulate your demands within schools, in a safe environment. We are here to turn those demands into action. We will not only engage in dialogue, as before, we will be your shield within the system. In cooperation with you, student councils, and experts, we will insist on urgent changes to ensure the highest possible level of your safety.

You are our conscience. We are your support,” the Ministry stated.
