WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump and his top aides are once again setting their sights on acquiring Greenland, even suggesting the use of military force if necessary.

But most Republican lawmakers who’ve been supportive of Trump’s deadly campaign against alleged drug smugglers in Latin America ― as well as the removal of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from the country in a U.S. military operation ― aren’t on board.

“It’s none of our business,” Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) told HuffPost. “We’re not going to take over another country that’s our ally.”

Moran, a veteran Republican who serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned the move would lead to “the demise of NATO.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) also told reporters he didn’t see military action against Greenland as an option, noting that the leaders of Denmark were “very passionate” about the semi-autonomous territory they own.

“That, to me, is not something that anybody is contemplating seriously,” Thune said.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) was even more blunt about the matter.

“This is really dumb,” Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general, wrote in a post online in response to White House adviser Stephen Miller advocating in an interview on CNN for the U.S. to take Greenland.

“Greenland and Denmark are our allies,” Bacon added. “There is no upside to demeaning our friends. But, it is causing wounds that will take time to heal.”

Greenland has repeatedly said it does not want to be part of the United States. But Trump’s rhetoric has sparked deep alarm among Danish officials in Copenhagen, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Tuesday that any U.S. move on Greenland would threaten the future of the NATO alliance.

Major European allies of the U.S. also said on Tuesday that they would “not stop defending” the values of sovereignty and territorial integrity following Trump’s threats against Greenland.

Yet the Trump administration has continued to press the case, arguing that U.S. control of Greenland was necessary to counter adversaries in the Arctic.

“The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal,” the White House said in a statement.

Some Republicans downplayed the idea of a U.S. military invasion of Greenland, suggesting Trump was merely using bluster to get his way on the world stage despite ordering a bombardment of Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela, over the weekend that killed dozens of people.

“I think the president truly enjoys just keeping people off balance all the time,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said. “And I think the more opportunity he has to make people look in lots of different directions, the more he enjoys it.”

Trump has also made threats against other countries following the Venezuela operation, including Cuba, Colombia, Mexico and Iran.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), a top Trump ally on Capitol Hill, said he supports efforts to acquire Greenland.

“We need to keep China and all these communists out of our hemisphere, taking all of our stuff,” Tuberville told HuffPost. ”[Trump’s] looking out for all the Americas now, and Greenland’s part of North America.”

The Senate is expected to vote on a bipartisan resolution blocking further military action against Venezuela later this week. At the moment, that effort looks likely to fail because most Republicans have lined up behind Trump on the matter.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) said he will introduce a similar resolution aimed at preventing U.S. military action in Greenland. Such resolutions are considered privileged under the War Powers Act, which Congress passed in the wake of the Vietnam War, and must receive a vote on the Senate floor.

“Trump is telling us exactly what he wants to do. We must stop him before he invades another country on a whim,” Gallego warned on Tuesday.
