President Donald Trump’s Energy Secretary Chris Wright danced around answering whether the president plans to retaliate against Iran after two U.S. service members were killed.

“We saw U.S. forces struck Iran for the eighth night in a row last night,” ABC’s Jonathan Karl said Sunday on “This Week.” “Is the president planning any further retaliation for the killing of those two U. S. service members?”

Wright indirectly answered, “This mission will go on until the mission is done.”

“Look, the president’s mission is essential for peace in the Middle East and peace in the world,” he said. “And that is to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons, and to degrade their ability to terrorize their neighbors and the world and global commerce.”

Karl pressed him further.

“But I’m asking you: Does he plan retaliation for the killing of those U.S. service members?” Karl questioned.

“It’s tragic to lose American lives, but this is a mission that will save countless lives going forward,” Wright responded. “His focus is on degrading the Iranian ability to terrorize the world, to hold world commerce hostage as they are doing right now, and to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. That is unchanged.”

Wright’s remarks came after the U.S. military said Saturday that it renewed airstrikes against Iran to “swiftly punish“ the country’s Revolutionary Guard for the deadly attack in Jordan that left 2 U.S. service members dead, one missing and four hospitalized.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s interim deal with Iran that was intended to cease the fighting has collapsed, and shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, an essential shipping chokepoint for global oil, has largely halted.

Sixteen U.S. service members have been killed and more than 430 have been injured since the war with Iran kicked off in late February, NPR reports.
