SC Gov. Appoints Lindsey Graham’s Sister To Senate Seat

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) said on Monday he’ll appoint Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to the seat formerly held by the late U.S. senator.

“Today under the law it’s my duty and honor to name someone to serve in the place of this irresistible man, this irreplaceable man, this extraordinary man for the remainder of his term,” McMaster said of Graham.

“It’s my honor to ask his little sister to finish his work for him now.”

Nordone accepted, joking she’d never heard her brother described as “irresistible.”

“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” she said in a short speech. “My brother was the most amazing person, outstanding leader, and just a generally good man.”

“I think this is what Lindsey would have wanted, and I plan to honor him in this way,” she continued. “Now, to Lindsey, I miss you more than I could even put into words, but I’m gonna do this. I got it. Thank you.”

Nordone became the establishment pick after President Donald Trump pressured McMaster to appoint her, framing the selection as a move to honor Graham.

“This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!” Trump claimed Monday.

Senate Majority Leader Jon Thune (R-S.D.) also appeared to support the idea, telling CNN’s Dana Bash he spoke with both Nordone and McMaster over the weekend.

“I think, in many respects, it would be a way of extending Lindsey’s legacy here, and certainly something that, if that’s what they decide to end up doing, I think there’d be a lot of support for,” Thune told Bash.

Graham never married and had no children, but wrote in his 2015 memoir about having a very close relationship with his sister, who is nine years his junior.

Nordone declined to comment to The New York Times after her brother’s death.

Graham, 71, died suddenly Saturday after developing a tear in his aorta.

Hours after Graham passed, Trump called into news programs and attempted to seize on the death to push his own legislative agenda. On Sunday, Trump claimed that Graham called him in his final hours to talk about his support for the SAVE Act and how “[Graham] was going to be there very, very strongly under the filibuster.”

On Monday, Trump also urged the Senate to pass a pro-cryptocurrency bill “in honor of” Sen. Graham, despite Graham’s own legislative history suggesting he would have been skeptical of the bill, at best.

The death has sparked a rush of Republicans vying for the open seat. Potential candidates include Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and current South Carolina Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman.

The state’s other U.S. senator, Tim Scott (R), briefly endorsed Trey Gowdy to fill Graham’s vacant seat. But Scott abruptly pulled his support for the former U.S. Rep. turned Fox News host after Trump weighed in.

Nordone will occupy the seat until November’s general election.

The state will also hold a special primary to select a new GOP nominee for November’s general election.
