Fox News host Jesse Watters appeared deeply troubled Tuesday that “Lightyear,” a digitally animated children’s movie from 2022, features a lesbian couple that (gasp!) kisses each other — and claimed this mundane representation of reality is “a slippery slope.”
His comments came after “I Wanna Fuck You” rapper Snoop Dogg said last month on a podcast that he “didn’t come in for this shit” when he watched the movie, and that the lesbian kiss would unfairly force him to explain the romantic act to his inquisitive grandson.
Watters empathized Tuesday on “The Five” — where the only liberal co-host pushed back while discussing research around a Cheerios ad that featured an interracial family.
“I think it is a good thing to have children who are being born today, like my kids, won’t notice there’s a Black dad and a white mom in that ad, versus when I was growing up, that I would be like, ‘Oh, that’s different than what I typically see,’” Jessica Tarlov said.
She continued, “You can be comfortable with the fact that there are two men kissing or two women kissing. I’m not saying you need to go deep into their bedroom and what’s going on there, but I don’t see what’s so offensive about that. There are gay couples all around us.”
Tarlov noted that same-sex couples have “every right” to kiss each other, only for Watters to ask, “Lesbians?” He then interrupted to ask if she meant “gays,” prompting Tarlov to explain that both male and female same-sex couples deserve representation.
“OK,” Watters said. “That’s what I wanted to hear.”
The panel ultimately devolved into heated crosstalk, with Fox News contributor Tyrus stating he doesn’t even want to see “a straight couple kissing in a cartoon,” and Tarlov trying to engage with that argument before co-host Dana Perino indignantly interrupted.
“It’s a cartoon!” she exclaimed, with co-host Paul Mauro asking Tarlov, “What about trans?”
“But ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ how do you save her? I mean, this is like …” Tarlov replied, when Tyrus interrupted to claim, “She was dead, to be fair.” Tarlov reminded him that the character was asleep, as her name implies, only for Mauro to state: “The problem is trans is next.”
Watters then reaffirmed his own bigotry and said, “It’s a slippery slope, Jessica.”
