Bruce Lehrmann lodges legal action against government in Federal Court

Former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann has lodged a new application against the government in the Federal Court.

The application targets the Special Minister of State, Don Farrell, and the Commissioner of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Paul Brereton.

The application is for judicial review, although there are no details about the background.

Mr Lehrmann is still waiting for a result in his appeal against a ruling in his failed defamation case against Network Ten and Lisa Wilkinson over an interview with Brittany Higgins.

During the interview Ms Higgins revealed allegations that she had been raped at Parliament House in 2019.

Mr Lehrmann faced a jury trial in the ACT, but it was abandoned due to juror misconduct, leaving no findings against him.

He took the matter to the Federal Court, claiming he was defamed by Ten and Lisa Wilkinson in the program.

But the court found on the balance of probabilities he did rape Ms Higgins on the night in question, ending the defamation case.

In his recent appeal, Mr Lehrmann sought to overturn the ruling.

It’s not known when the court will rule on the case.
