The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has honoured 11 medical interns at the end of a year-long clinical training programme seen as crucial to developing Antigua and Barbuda’s next generation of doctors.

The internship provides practical experience across a range of specialties and is a mandatory step before full licensing. This year’s graduates include Dr. Stephanie Deib, Dr. Neejah Crump, Dr. Grace Edwards, Dr. Phillescia Jean, Dr. Michelle Jeffrey, Dr. Alex Kelsick, Dr. Prince Lee, Dr. Debresia Lewis, Dr. Alicia Rouse, Dr. Doniece Thomas and Dr. Lee Ann Sandy.

Several interns received special recognition. Dr. Michelle Jeffrey was awarded for Clinical Excellence, while Dr. Alicia Rouse secured both the Patient Care and Compassion Award and the coveted Intern of the Year title. Dr. Neejah Crump earned the Leadership and Team Spirit Award, Dr. Prince Lee was named Most Improved Intern, and Dr. Alex Kelsick received the Spirit of Service Award.

The hospital also highlighted the role of mentors and departments in guiding the class. Dr. Vonetta George received the Mentorship Award, the Paediatrics Team was recognised for Outstanding Department Support, and Dr. Samora Goodwin was named Best Teaching Consultant.

Hospital officials said the programme is central to strengthening the health sector.
“Graduations like this affirm the importance of mentorship, teamwork and excellence in healthcare,” an SLBMC spokesperson said. “We congratulate our new doctors and look forward to their continued service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.”
