Official Statement from the Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda (MAAB) on the Passing of Dr. Ramamurthi Bekal

The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda (MAAB), alongside the entire medical fraternity, extends our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Ramamurthi Bekal, retired General Surgeon, who passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the age of 94.

Dr. Bekal was a pillar of the surgical community, serving at the Holberton Hospital for over 35 years. Throughout his distinguished career, he was more than a clinician; he was a cornerstone of medical institutional knowledge and a dedicated mentor who shaped the careers of generations of physicians in Antigua and Barbuda.

He will be remembered most for his quiet demeanor, compassion, and patient advocacy. His excellent bedside manner served as a masterclass in the art of healing, proving that technical mastery is most effective when paired with a gentle spirit.

His legacy lives on in the lives he saved and the medical professionals he inspired to practice with the same integrity and grace he displayed every day.

The MAAB offers its thoughts and prayers to the Bekal family during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Sincerely,
The Executive Team
