Health Minister Michael Joseph said a proposed partnership with Zhejiang People’s Hospital in China has the potential to significantly enhance Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare system.

Minister Joseph made the comments following talks with senior hospital officials during an official visit to China. He toured the facility, observing its use of artificial intelligence and advanced healthcare technologies, as well as its focus on medical training and research.

“This collaboration has the potential to significantly enhance our healthcare system through knowledge-sharing, specialised training, and clinical support. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that the people of Antigua and Barbuda benefit from international best practices and cutting-edge medical innovation,” he said.

Minister Joseph met with the hospital’s Vice President, Dr Zhang Dahong, to discuss possible collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the institution. Both sides agreed in principle to pursue a formal partnership aimed at strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s health sector.

Dr Zhang, a urologist, said he was committed to organising a medical mission to Antigua and Barbuda. The mission would assess patients requiring complex post-operative and specialised surgical care, while offering support to local healthcare professionals.

The proposed partnership also includes a training and knowledge-exchange programme. Local healthcare workers would have the opportunity to receive specialised training at Zhejiang People’s Hospital, while Chinese medical experts would travel to Antigua and Barbuda to provide mentorship and technical support to local teams.
