Athletic Club forward Inaki Williams has announced his retirement from international duty with Ghana.

The 32-year-old scored two goals in 28 caps for the Black Stars after making his debut in September 2022.

He featured for the West Africans at the 2022 and 2026 Fifa World Cups and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Williams appeared twice at this year’s World Cup as Ghana were knocked out in the last 32 by Colombia.

“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end,” he said in a post on social media.

“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”

Williams, who was born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, chose to represent the Black Stars after previously playing for Spain at youth level and in a 2016 friendly at senior level.

His younger brother Nico, who also plays for Athletic Club in Bilbao, chose to represent Spain and has gone on to become a World Cup and European Championship winner with La Roja.

Inaki Williams’ announcement comes a week after it was confirmed that Carlos Queiroz would return as Ghana coach in the build-up to the 2027 Afcon in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

He said his time with Ghana had given him “much more than football”.

“It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest,” he added.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me.

“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am.”
