The State government is likely to release funds for the second phase of the western bypass in Coimbatore.

The development of the Coimbatore Western Bypass road project for is expected to enter its second phase soon with the State government likely to make the necessary fund allocations.
The 32.43-km bypass road project was conceived in 2007, and its construction was divided into three phases. In the first phase (11.80 km) from Madukkarai Mailkal to Sellampalayam, the road has been laid and opened for traffic.
For the second phase (12.10 km) from Sellampalayam to Kanuvai, over 90% of the land acquisition has been done by the Construction and Maintenance (C&M) Wing of the Highways Department. The C&M Wing has estimated the development cost to be ₹368 crore.
The administrative transfer made last April from the Highways Department to Tamil Nadu State Highways Development Authority pushed the future of phase II into uncertainty after spending a huge amount of money on land acquisition for the project. With the recently presented State Budget making no announcement regarding this, Coimbatore feared that the project might get shelved.
However, a source in the know, told The Hindu that development of the bypass road is expected to continue as it is an ongoing project. “It is also likely that it will be done by the Highways Department and not the authority [Tamil Nadu State Highways Development Authority],” the source said. Meetings are going on this regard, the source added.
