U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley’s proposal to provide rebate checks from President Trump’s tariffs has now been officially filed. He laid out details of the bill in an interview with Missourinet.
“(It would be) $600 per individual, so $1,200 per couple. If you’ve got a couple of kids, $2,400 for a family,” Hawley said. “It would be for blue collar people, so it would phase out (for higher income people). The wealthy wouldn’t get it. Elon Musk, he doesn’t need it. So wealthy folks, they won’t get it, but it would be (for) working class people.”
Kiplinger.com reports that full rebate checks would go to people making under $75,000 a year, to heads of households making less than $112,500, and to couples filing joint tax returns under $150,000 a year. Smaller rebate checks would go to those earning more, with high earners getting zero.
Also, “nonresident alien individuals” would not be eligible, nor would anyone who can be claimed as a dependent on another person’s income tax return, trust, or estate.
“President Trump’s tariffs are bringing in $150 billion this year. That is an incredible amount of money,” said Hawley, R-Missouri. “He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for pursuing these trade deals for getting this increased revenue, and it sends a terrific signal, a terrific message to working people that we are with them.”
Opponents argue that tariff rebate checks would make the budget deficit worse and that revenues from tariffs should be used to pay down the national debt.
