The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has issued a stern warning to students after some were seen participating in a recent anti-corruption protest in Banjul.

The demonstration, organised by Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), reportedly included students from The Gambia Senior Secondary School, who joined while dressed in school uniform.

In a statement, the Ministry condemned the involvement of students in protests, calling it “unacceptable” and warning that such participation exposes minors to unnecessary risks.

While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the Ministry stressed that students must be shielded from public events that could compromise their safety or disrupt their education.

“The welfare of students is a collective responsibility. We urge school heads, parents, and guardians to ensure that children are properly guided and not drawn into politically charged environments,” the statement said.

Citing the Children’s Act 2005 and national education policies, the Ministry reminded the public that minors should not be used in protests unrelated to educational issues.

Authorities are now calling on schools, communities, security agencies, and child protection bodies to reinforce safeguards and prevent future student involvement in such events.

MoBSE said it remains committed to maintaining a secure and supportive environment for all students in and out of school.
