Palau faces critical decision on New National Hospital sSite, USDA Assessment Finds

KOROR, Palau — Three Palauan states—Koror, Airai, and Ngatpang—have offered potential land for the nation’s urgently needed new hospital, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture assessment released this month. The “USDA Assessment of Proposed New Hospital Sites in the Republic of Palau” finds that relocating Belau National Hospital (BNH) is a national priority as environmental hazards and aging infrastructure threaten health care delivery[1].

The BNH, Palau’s only hospital, is more than 30 years old and suffers from limited capacity, physical deterioration, and increased risks from flooding and climate change[1]. The USDA report evaluates proposed sites in Koror, Airai, and Ngatpang states, based on environmental safety, technical feasibility, accessibility, and economic considerations[1].

Key Points from the Report

  • Environmental Resilience: Each location is assessed for resistance to flooding, typhoons and rising sea levels, reflecting Palau’s acute vulnerability to climate change[1].
  • Accessibility: The report highlights the need for proximity to major roads and population centers, enabling rapid access for patients and medical staff[1].
  • Health System Readiness: Any new facility must be robust, disaster-ready, and able to ensure ongoing care during emergencies[1].
  • Sustainable Development: The project aims to support Palau’s broader infrastructure and national development plans, including health investment and sustainable growth[1].
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The site selection process includes consultations with local stakeholders to ensure the new hospital meets community health needs and national objectives[1].

Though the USDA assessment stops short of naming a preferred site, it concludes the best choice will be an inland and elevated location that offers resilience against environmental threats and sufficient connectivity to serve all Palauans. The final decision is expected to take into account both technical evaluation and community input, underscoring the new hospital’s vital role in improving national health resilience.
