Eswatini’s Thandolwethu Mamba officially made his international debut as a leading opera singer at Opera Wilmington; a prestigious event held at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).
Don Giovanni plays July 18, 20, 25 and 27 at UNCW’s Mainstage Theatre.
The young artist captivated audiences with his role as Don Giovanni, showcasing not only his vocal prowess but also his deep connection to the character and the art form itself.
Thandolwethu Mamba has been on a journey of artistic exploration that began far from the grand stages of the world.

Growing up in Mbabane, Eswatini, he discovered his passion for opera through the humble means of a friend’s mother’s computer.
“We’re a long way from the boy who fell in love with this work through the tiny screen, but the feeling of wonder and excitement is still as potent, if not more,” he reflected.

The production of Don Giovanni, a classic opera directed by Nancy King, is known for its complex characters and rich musical landscape.
Thando’s portrayal of the infamous seducer was met with acclaim, as he brought a fresh perspective to the role, blending charisma with a nuanced understanding of the character’s darker elements.
“This has been, and continues to be, an adventure of discovery, challenges, triumphs, and trust in and within myself,” he shared.

The final dress rehearsal, which took place just days before the opening night, was a moment of pride for Thando and his castmates.
“Thank you, Dr Stephen Lutz, for these wonderful photos from our final dress rehearsal. In bocca al lupo a tutti,” he expressed, a phrase meaning “break a leg” in Italian.
“Happy Opening Night. What a dream it has been for our cast and crew to put on this show,” said Opera Wilmington.
