SHIPPENSBURG — Kaley Seide’s first thought when she gathered with her Parkland 3,200-meter relay teammates was the streak was finally broken.

“We were consistently second over and over again,” she said.

Well, Seide, Lucy Tobia, Cierra Valley and Dhaniya Miner decided to change their fortunes.

They did so in a huge way. They ran a Lehigh Valley area-best 47.41 to win Class 3A gold Saturday at the PIAA Track & Field Championships.

It was the third consecutive week in which the foursome broke the school record.

“I said to myself that there was no way that [Stroudsburg’s Alena Murray] was going to catch me again,” Seide said. “I’m not letting her catch me for the third time.

“I did it today.”

Murray and the Mountaineers tracked down Seide and the Trojans to win EPC and District 11 3A gold, but Saturday was Parkland’s day to shine.

The foursome’s handoffs were solid as they were up to the competition that also included Lower Merion, Downingtown West and Academy at Palumbo.

“We just have been pushing ourselves to be the fastest we can,” Valley said. “A lot of relay teams push themselves in practice late in the season. We go hard in practice all year.”

Stroudsburg’s foursome of Laila Findley, Julia Grant, Madelyn Vargas and Alena Murray had the area’s fastest time for a day. They ran 48.15 in Friday’s qualifying round.

Parkland ran 48.35 in Friday’s qualifying.

“It was definitely harder today because we all had races yesterday and woke up sore today,” Tobia said. “We did our best to stretch, did the best we could. It was great that we could do this.”
