Securing Las Vegas homes before summer travel: Tips from an expert

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Whether it’s for a long weekend or for several weeks, securing your home is vital so that you don’t become the next target for thieves.

Security expert Elena Ledoux, who owns her own security screens company, says she’s seen an uptick in her business. Particularly now, as people are getting ready for summer travel.

“We have certain pockets of town like The Lakes, Summerlin and Aliante, where it seems they are hotspots for home invasions,” Ledoux told 8 News Now.

Just this month, Metro police reported a deadly home burglary in the guard-gated community of Canyon Gate Country Club. The intruder was shot and killed by the homeowner.

Ledoux said knowing your neighbors can make a big difference in your safety.

“A lot of people recommend Neighborhood Watch just so you can keep an eye on each other’s properties. Your neighbors can be a great resource to you,” Ledoux said.

Another tip: Before you leave your house, make a final check around the property and take photos as a reminder.

As for security cameras and lighting, protect them by locking up your fuse box.

“Thieves nowadays know that your cameras are connected to your Wi-Fi and power and typically those electric panels are located right outside your house. Making it easy for them to shut off all your utilities so they can’t be seen,” she said.

Also, be careful with whom you share your information — especially if you live in a gated community where people may be delivering items and need an access point to get in.

“Think about all the people that may have your gate code,” Ledoux said. “From a delivery driver, mailperson or a landscaper. Anyone who may have access to those people’s phones will have your information. So, if possible, change it while you are away or even monthly to be safe.”

Lastly, don’t post your trip on social media. Wait until you are back before sharing that information with others as that is a prime way for intruders to take advantage and scour your property.
