MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Work has officially begun on a mural that organizers say will have an incredible impact on the Minot community.
The Union Silos Public Art Project officially began today in downtown Minot. Australian-born visual artist and photographer Guido van Helten began his work on transforming the retired grain silos on 1st St NE into a larger-than-life portrait of the community. This mural is part of Van Helten’s Monuments series, which features large-scale artworks across the US.
Van Helten says he spent months in Minot photographing, interviewing, and engaging with people in the community to inspire his design.

“I find that there’s just a lot more going on here,” he said. “You have some interesting industry and different people coming through in the military, and I find it to be a very expensive place in terms of inspiration, so Minot couldn’t be a better place.”
The mural will cover all four sides of the Union Silos and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025. The design has been approved, but the final look will remain a surprise until the work is finished.
