HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) – A nonprofit in Cabell County is working to transform the lives of its clients by providing a unique new service.
The staff at the Harmony House in Huntington say they’re looking to add hairdressers and barbers to their team because a haircut is about much more than changing your appearance; it’s about changing your outlook on life.
“I think it’s great that there’s help for people that when they need it, you know, because some people fall on hard times, like, well, I mean, everybody struggles,” says Michelle Curry, a client who visits Harmony House to get dog food and other items.
The shelter’s mission focuses on ending homelessness for its clients through its permanent housing programming and day-to-day services.
“I want to give them some assurance in life, and I think they would want to do more with their day. I would want them to boost their confidence and just feel good about themselves,” said John Leon, Shelter Supervisor.
The shelter provides warm meals, a place to stay during the day, recovery coaching, and many more services for those experiencing homelessness.
Leon joined the team two and a half years ago. He says it’s been years since the shelter has provided hair care, and he is looking forward to bringing the program back to life.
“I think if they can get a haircut, cleaned up, and shave that they feel better about themselves and they want to do more with their day,” says Leon.
Leon was once a client at Harmony House and started working as a volunteer himself. He wants to help others in the same position he was once in.
Haircuts will be done in the side room near the entrance area, several times a month, depending on availability, at no cost. The hairstylist positions will be entirely volunteer-based, and volunteers must provide their own tools.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can reach them at their website here and ask for Leon.
